Part 2 (Summer 2025): Astrid Schween and Aaron Berofsky

Week 2 of our summer season brings a newcomer to Garth Newel’s stage, the magnificent Astrid Schween.

“The size and warmth of her sound. It absolutely transformed the whole sound of the Juilliard String Quartet when she joined. She’s an incredibly warm human being and that’s totally reflected in her playing” says Steve Wogaman, our CEO.

For an example of that rich tone, watch this video of her Chopin Cello Sonata.

And did you know that one of her teachers was Jacqueline du Pré? Just one of the fascinating facts about her that you can learn through her episode of “Living the Creative Life“. Prompted by the ever thoughtful questions of host Zsolt Bognár, Astrid muses on her career with incisive reflection.

Astrid will be performing with the Garth Newel Piano Quartet, along with long-time Garth Newel favorite, Aaron Berofsky. Aaron has been performing as a guest violinist at Garth Newel since the summer of 1992, and many of you are familiar with the entrancing beauty of his playing. I still remember the first time I heard Aaron Berofsky play. It was Strauss Sonata with pianist Boris Slutsky, and I remember being amazed at the supple sweetness of his sound and the easy flexibility with which he shaped those endless melodies.

Hear both Astrid Schween and Aaron Berofsky on July 12th and July 13th. They will join the Garth Newel Piano Quartet in two programs of blockbuster chamber works, which include Schubert’s transcendent cello quintet and Dohnanyi’s impassioned first piano quintet.
