ABOUT THE QUARTET
The Garth Newel Piano Quartet maintains an active presence on the national and international stage, performing throughout the United States and on five continents at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Strathmore Hall, Chamber Music Detroit, The Chautauqua Institution, and the San Diego Chamber Music Workshop. Known for thoughtful programming and engaging, conversational performances, the Quartet brings chamber music to audiences in ways that are both accessible and artistically rigorous.
Deeply committed to creativity and artistic growth, the Quartet regularly commissions and premieres new works, supports emerging composers, and champions the piano quartet repertoire through performances, recordings, and an annual composition competition. Their collaborators include Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Paul Moravec and composer David Biedenbender, whose commission was supported by a 2017 Chamber Music America (CMA) commissioning grant. Through these efforts, the Quartet continues to promote new voices and contribute meaningfully to the evolution of the piano quartet repertoire.
Education and mentorship are central to the mission of the Garth Newel Piano Quartet. The ensemble serves as faculty and directors of Garth Newel’s Emerging Artist Fellowship Program, offering talented college-age musicians the opportunity to study and perform chamber music under the guidance of the Quartet and world-renowned guest artists. Additional educational initiatives include an annual Amateur Chamber Music Retreat and Music in the Schools residencies throughout Virginia and into neighboring states. Members of the Quartet have also given masterclasses at universities and conservatories around the world, nurturing the next generation of chamber musicians through mentorship, performance, and collaboration.
