Nancy Hammerstrom Bishop
I was born and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia. I graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, majoring in English. I taught elementary school for several years and truly loved it.
My real career began after I moved to Roanoke, Virginia. I had two children, Taylor and Carrington, and I loved dressing them in beautiful clothes. When I couldn’t find what I was looking for locally, I opened a children’s clothing boutique called Toad’ly Kids. It brought me great joy to dress not only my own children, but later my four grandchildren as well.
I owned the store for 30 years and loved every bit of it. I am very much a people person, and through my business I met so many wonderful individuals. Being a mother and grandmother has been one of the greatest joys of my life.
One of my proudest honors was being named Roanoke’s Mother of the Year in the field of family life by the Merchants Association of the Roanoke Valley. I also served on the board of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra for three years. I love all types of music, though I must admit I quit piano after one lesson — much to my regret.
I was honored to serve on the board of Greenvale School for 20 years, culminating in my role as President. I also served on the board of the Roanoke Country Club for three years, where I headed the swimming program.
My church, Second Presbyterian, is very important to me. I served as an elder for three years and found the experience deeply rewarding. I am also a member of the Mill Mountain Garden Club and a sustainer in the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley.
I have been married to Jim Bishop for seven years. We live in Roanoke and also have a home in North Ridge. We have thoroughly enjoyed attending concerts at Garth Newel and getting to know the other attendees. I consider Garth Newel to be a real gem, and I am honored to be asked to serve on the board.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing bridge and tennis, gardening, reading, and exercising.
