Dan Colston
Dan is a partner at the law firm of Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard in Greensboro, North Carolina. His area of practice focuses on complex business litigation, with special emphasis on intellectual property matters. He practices primarily in the federal courts in the Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts of North Carolina and in the North Carolina Business Court. He has also appeared in cases in the North Carolina and federal appellate courts.
Dan is a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Law. After law school, he served as a law clerk to The Hon. James A. Wynn, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Prior to becoming an attorney, Dan was a musician. From 2004–2009, he appeared as an emerging artist fellow at Garth Newel, performing on violin and viola—still a record! Dan holds a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of North Carolina, master’s degrees in violin and viola from Baylor University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where his research focused on fingering and vibrato techniques in early 20th century English music.
During his summers at Garth Newel, Dan fell in love with the festival and Bath County and has wanted to remain actively involved in the future of Garth Newel ever since. It is the place his beloved wife, Kristin Freas Colston, calls “his happy place.”
