Part 6 (Summer 2025): Our Finale Weekend with Jasper Quartet, violinist Joel Fuller and the Garth Newel Piano Quartet

We are celebrating the final week of our summer festival with new and old friends:
The Jasper String Quartet will make its Garth Newel debut in two collaborative concerts with the Garth Newel Piano Quartet. They currently teach in Philadelphia at Temple University’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians. They have won top honors at several international competitions and received the prestigious CMA Cleveland Quartet Award.
Joel Fuller, one of our favorite guest artists, is a violinist with the National Symphony Orchestra. A lover of chamber music, Joel Fuller is a founding member of the Last Stand Quartet with members of the NSO and a member of the IBIS Chamber Music Society. Recent solo engagements include concerto performances with the Londontowne Symphony, the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra, and the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra. Fuller plays on a violin made in Cremona, Italy by Omobono Stradivari in 1724 named the ex-Powell.
Over the years, he has introduced us to his wife Susan, his children, his dog Annabelle, and Herb the turtle. The Garth Newel family is continually expanding!
The programs also consist of new and old friends: Two Soviet-era piano quintets—one time-worn favorite by Shostakovich and the other new to Garth Newel by Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz. In these works, both composers utilized Classical and Baroque structures, possibly to evade the repressive government censorship, yet still maintained their unique voices.
The Jasper Quartet will also introduce us to the work of Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, who is a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation. Pisachi (Reveal) consists of 6 snapshots of the American Southwest and draws specifically from Hopi and Pueblo Indian music, rhythms, and form.
Two of our most beloved composers—Dvorak and Mendelssohn—will anchor the weekend’s programs. Nothing can surpass the joy of Dvorak’s Op. 51 String Quartet with its Slavonic songs and dances, or the exuberance of Mendelssohn’s Octet, written when he was just 16 years old.
