On June 27th, the fantastic Michelle Cann comes to Garth Newel with a recital that will be both illuminating and thrilling. In it, she will feature the trailblazers of African American classical music with the works of Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Nora Douglas Holt, Irene Britton Smith, and Betty Jackson King. And there is no one better to bring this music to life than the pianist who brought Florence Price back to the forefront. Not only is Michelle Cann one of the leading pianists of her generation, she’s devoted her concertizing to bringing works by these incredible women to the national consciousness.
But rather than wax poetic, it is more preferable to have Michelle herself tell you why you should listen. In this thought provoking interview on the show Living the Creative Life, she speaks with Zsolt Bognár (who you will also see on our stage August 15th and 16th for piano weekend) about why Florence Price should be paid attention to.
Don’t miss Michelle Cann’s recital on June 27th! She inaugurates our new Cadenza piano recital series, which continues with recitals by Jeannette Fang and Ieva Jokubaviciute in fall 2026 and spring of 2027.
