A Seat at Our Table: Thanksgiving with the Garth Newel Family

"When I think of Thanksgiving, I think of visiting family and friends at home, where we share a ridiculously large meal..."

Read on to learn more from Teresa Ling, Artistic Director, as she shares Thanksgiving at Garth Newel with us.

And home for me is Garth Newel; its very name loosely translates to “new home” in Welsh. Being at Garth Newel for 27 years has allowed me to forge enduring relationships with my colleagues as well as many of you who frequent our concerts. Whether you like it or not, you’re all a part of my family now! And when you think about it, there is no better place to celebrate Thanksgiving: no cooking; no cleaning; no thawing out the turkey (I tragically discovered that one day was not nearly enough). In addition to Chef Josh’s turkey feast, you can also enjoy great music.

This year, we have programmed four undisputed masterpieces between our Thursday and Friday concerts:

Thursday, November 27th, 4pm concert, followed by optional Thanksgiving Feast:
  • Beethoven’s Piano Quartet Op. 16 is the work of a young man trying to make a name for himself in the musical capital of the world–Vienna. He shows off his mastery of the Viennese classical style as well as his prowess as a pianist in this delightful work.
  • Faure’s Piano Quartet, Op. 45 is truly a feast for the senses. This work is proof that musical sounds can express color, texture, warmth, coolness, light, and shadow. From the monumental drama of the opening to the barn-burner of the finale, this piece should not be missed!

Friday, November 28th, 5pm Concert followed by optional four course dinner:

  • Rebecca Clarke was born and raised in England to an American father and German mother. She ultimately settled in America and it was in New York City that she composed her Viola Sonata. When she entered it into a prestigious competition, she initially tied for first place with Ernest Bloch, but ultimately was denied the prize as nobody truly believed that a woman was capable of composing such an extraordinary work.
  • Dvorak composed his Piano Trio in F Minor under stressful circumstances. His mother, with whom he was extremely close, had recently died and this work reflects a depth of emotion and tragedy that is unusual for Dvorak. Although his Dumky Trio is more famous, this is my favorite of his four piano trios.

Even though I tend to fixate on the gluttonous aspect of Thanksgiving, I try to remember to be thankful: for this beautiful place that I call home; for my extraordinary colleagues and friends here; and most of all, for all of you who support this special and unique organization. I hope to see you on Thanksgiving!
