Justin Flynn takes cutting edge modern jazz saxophone and makes it beautiful. His big sound and authoritative playing balance his passion for melody and he always focuses on communication with the audience. Justin’s commitment to communication shows in his writing, as well. In each composition, he and his fellow musicians explore their ideas and engage their listeners. He has composed for a number of diff erent ensembles and his arrangements have been performed with the NYC Ballet, the NYC Fringe Festival, and on numerous recordings.
Justin was Garth Newel’s first composer-in-residence and the music from that engagement has been recorded by his new group Big Train. The CD, entitled Travels, will be released this fall on Bad Gorilla Records- and available first to you- here at Garth Newel!
Active on the New York jazz scene for the last ten years, Justin has recorded with Joe Locke, Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine, Bruce Barth and Ronnie Cuber, and worked with many great musicians including Rufus Reid, Vincent Herring, Dave Liebman, Jim Rotondi, and Bruce Barth. Justin was recently awarded the prestigious Chamber Music America Grant for New Works: Creation and Presentation.
